Using VoIP technology means that the voice (telephone calls) flow via the computer network.
To get high quality communication, there are technical aspects that should be considered:
- Above all, the company’s internal computer network (LAN) should be of good quality and certified if possible.
The telephone exchange, as well as all of the IP and/or SIP telephone devices will be directly linked on the LAN.
Telephone calls are converted into IP voice packets in the same way as data packets on a computer network. The voice and data packets will therefore move together on the network.
The voice packets are very sensitive to the propagation speed on the LAN, so it is recommended to prioritize them over the data packets in order to guarantee the quality of service (QoS).
- The IP Terminals that are installed will be PoE.
- The switch is responsible for the interconnection of all elements of an IP network (Server, PC, Printer, telephone exchange, router, IP devices, scanner, etc). If the switch is PoE, it supplies 48 volts to the telephone terminals without resorting to individual feeds.
- If one chooses to connect to a SIP provider, the IP telephone exchange will be connected to a router. In terms of QoS on the router, the same rules will apply as on the internal corporate network.
- The link that is commonly used to connect to a WAN is ADSL or VDSL. In the case of VoIP communications, the VDSL links are preferred because they offer greater bandwidth than the ADSL. (In order to avoid any deterioration of quality, the voice packets to be exchanged with the SIP provider should be transmitted at the greatest possible speed).
- To avoid any risk of loss or delay in delivery of voice packets, we will focus on a SIP operator with their own backbone rather than use the internet network as a transport tube to reach the telephone operator.
